If you're looking for a massive dose of inspiration and radically new ways to fuel innovation, this event is for you. Join us in the first of our Innovation Series where we will explore what happens when the world of fashion and science collide. 

Dr. Yuly Fuentes-Medel will lead a panel of scientists, entrepreneurs and designers who will give a sneak peak into Descience…a global fashion initiative that is changing the face of design. "I was stunned by the similarities between the worlds of Fashion and Science and their interest in bringing innovation to the world. YULY FUENTES-MEDEL, Executive Director Descience ( HOST)

Yuly is a catalyst of creative ideas. She recently finished a Postdoc Associate fellowship in the MIT Sloan School and graduated with a PhD in biomedical sciences from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, USA. Yuly is energetically involved in fostering the life sciences ecosystem as an intern for Propel Careers. She is an active member of Women Entrepreneurs in Science and Technology (WEST) and received a Volunteer Giving back award. During her time as a Ph.D. student, she pioneered the co-organization of the International workshop called “Small Brains Big Ideas”, held in Santiago, Chile. So far, this initiative has successfully trained sixty Latin-American students. She also was the President of Encuentros 2013, Boston, a movement aimed to inspire innovation for Chilean young talent studing abroad, Trained as a biochemist at University of Concepcion in her native Chile, she is constantly in the search of opportunity to support young talent.

CLAIRE JARVIS, Fashion Director Descience

Claire graduated at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design where her work has been featured in the college’s annual fashion show as well as its student life gallery. Claire was recently selected as the winner of the “People’s Choice Award” in the Sarifixation challenge, sponsored by MIT start-up Lallitara. She also worked as the designer for Encuentros 2013. Areas of interest include sustainable fashion, textile design, knitwear design and entrepreneurship. Originally from Tennessee, Claire studied history at the College of Charleston and Universidad Pontificia de Chile.

 

PATRICIA TORREGROSA, Science Director Descience (joining via skype)

Patricia is an Immunologist with a background in Molecular Biology from Stockholm University. She is enrolled in the PhD program of Medicine at Karolinska Institute but is currently working as a visiting researcher at MGH-Harvard. Her work focuses on discovering the impact of breastfeeding in the context of allergy development in the child. Due to her interest in alternative ways to communicate science, she uses crochet to express and visualize her research. During her PhD she has designed crochet items that reflects her work in the laboratory – art that will be included in her thesis to promote science education.

 

ISIDORA VALDES, Creative Business Descience

Founder and the genius mastermind at Goose Design Studio. A creative and visionary business woman, Isidora has a passion for design, its methods, tools and dimensions. Entrepreneur by nature, and a doer, she is ahead of the wave as a social media addict and a good friend of SMEs, NGOs and Start Ups. She got her Integral Design degree from Universidad Católica de Chile and a major in Business Management from the Business School at the Universidad de Chile. CARLOS VALLAMIL, Fashion Designer, Team 14 Descience

Carlos is a Colombian Designer based in Boston, MA since early 2006. He is the creator of Zero Waste fashion collection consisting of five garments made entirely with design felt. Zero Waste fashion requires a rigorous design approach. Clothes are designed/built with innovative construction concepts, using 100% of the fabric, rather than traditional pattern-making and clothing production techniques.In the late nineties he worked in Italy for the Europe Central Industrial Design Office of Whirlpool Appliances. When he moved to the United States he started working in graphic design and marketing while studying Fashion Design at the prestigious Massachusetts College of Art and Design. AMANDA CURTIS, Fashion Designer, Team 2 Descience

Amanda graduate from the prestigious Parson's School of Design in NYC and She have worked for designers such as Diane Von Furstenburg and Richie Rich. Some of her pieces have gone down the runway at Lincoln Center during New York Fashion Week. One suit that she made for the runway was worn by Ellen DeGeneres. She is now back in Boston, her hometown, working as the head designer for fashion and lifestyle brand Alistair Archer. The first collection that she created for Alistair Archer made it to the final round of judging for London Fashion Week. EDUARDO VILLABLANCA, Instructor, Harvard Medical School, Team 56 Descience

Eduardo is an Immunologist holding positions as Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Research Scientist at the Broad Institute. Eduardo is interested in how lymphocytes and dendritic cells (DC) acquire tissue-specific migratory capacity (“homing”) and how tissue-specific homing is related to tumor immune tolerance. Eduardo have discovered mechanism of gut-DC differentiation and function, discoveries published in high impact journals. Eduardo is currently investigating how impaired DC migration to the intestine might result in exacerbation of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). Thus, DC migration, differentiation and recruitment can be exploited to guide effector/tolerogenic immune responses depending on the desired outcome. Eduardo’s future research will focus in the study of interplay between tumor cells and the immune system, process that might result in immune tolerance. Interestingly, several mechanisms to induce immune tolerance to commensal bacteria in the gut has been found in tumors, such as the induction of IDO on DC or induction/recruitment of Foxp3 T regulatory cells. LAURA INDOLFI, Postodoc, MIT Koch Institute, Team 14 Descience

Dr. Indolfi's research is mainly focused in the areas of drug delivery and cell therapy for regenerative medicine. In the first thrust of research she aims to propel the design of novel drug delivery systems by using material science knowledge to a priori program desired drug release kinetics within therapeutic windows. Within the second thrust Dr. Indolfi has been engaged in understanding the role that specific material properties have in tuning cell biology and how engineering cell phenotype can potentially be used to treat cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Indolfi is also very keen to the translational aspect of the biomedical research into industrial application and commercialization, broadening her business knowledge through classes at the Sloan Business School within the Biomedical Enterprise Program.
