How Do You Make a Crazy Person Sane?

Question by x: How do you make a crazy person sane?
From Wikipedia: Insulin shock therapy (also called Insulin Coma Therapy) was used as a treatment for schizophrenia, psychosis and drug addiction, involving injecting the patient with massive amounts of insulin, which causes convulsions and coma. It was developed by Polish researcher Manfred Sakel in 1933 and was used well into the 1950s, being replaced by tranquilizing drugs and then later anti-psychotic drugs as well (which also have a sedative effect.) This form of shock treatment, along with Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), derived from the notion (later disproved) that epileptic convulsions and schizophrenic symptoms were never present at the same time in one patient. Methods of administering the treatment varied and there was no precise way of doing it.

How Can I Stop My Family From Abusing Me?

Question by Terese: How can I stop my family from abusing me?
I’m over 50 years old. My brothers are younger than me. My sister is a year older than me. They’re interfering with my life. They’re trying to tell me I shouldn’t see my male friend because he has a “past.” Yes, he HAD a problem with prescription drug addiction. It was over two years ago. He’s been in a program, has been in counseling with me, we’re working things out, we’re practicing Catholics, and his problems stem from a very personal issue in his past having to do with a member of the clergy and abuse. None of my family members know this and it’s NONE of their business. My brothers insist that they don’t want him around the family and that he’s not welcome at any family functions. The ironic thing is that ALL THREE of my siblings have used illegal drugs in their past. I’m the only one who has never touched an illegal substance. What a bunch of hipocrites! My siblings all claim to be CHRISTIANS. Where’s the forgiveness? At what point do you move on–if ever? My boyfriend is devastated by their behavior and extremely angry. I’ve been forced to choose between my family and him, and I’ve chosen him. My mother is the only neutral one, and she’s torn because she feels threatened by my brothers and bullied by my sister, who is her caregiver. What am I to do? I’ve never felt so low, helpless, and hopeless in my life.

AARON BECK – How Does His Model of the Mind Differ From Any Other School of Psychology? They Are All Models.?

Question by HJG: AARON BECK – How does his model of the mind differ from any other school of psychology? They are all models.?
Beck discovered that by increasing patients’ objectivity regarding their misinterpretations of situations or subjective sensations or feelings (cognitive distortions) and their negative expectancies, they experienced a substantial shift in their thinking and subsequently in their affect and behavior. This approach consists of a combination of strategies and techniques designed to modify the cognitive distortions and thus enable the patients to cope more effectively with their psychological and interpersonal problems. An important principle emanating from his work was that patients can assume an active role in normalizing their dysfunctional thinking and thus gain relief from, and subsequently remission of, their psychiatric conditions. Of particular note is the finding that the therapy is more effective than drug treatment alone in reducing relapse in depression, bipolar disorder, panic disorder and schizophrenia.

What Percentage of the People Are Healthy?

Question by stc: What percentage of the people are healthy?
It is odd. I ask this half seriously, half not seriously….After you take away people who are drug addicted, have eating disorders, gambling problems, psychological disorders and physical challenges, addiction to online stuff. Attention deficent. All that is left are people who work hard at being physically fit. It’s odd.
There probably are a large chunk of people who are reasonably healthy in the world, but, it is weird to think about them. Whatever they do — why don’t we copy them? Professional athletes? Doctors? Healthy lawyers? It would be weird if the world were reduced down to primarily healthy people. What would they do? Not a lot of business for health carers and lawyers if everybody’s healthy. I’m just idle tonight so I fiddle with these thoughts.

Is Dedicating Ones Life to Religion Worse Than Dedicating Ones Life to Drug Addiction?

Question by Desiree: Is dedicating ones life to religion worse than dedicating ones life to drug addiction?
Drug addiction typically only causes damage to one person’s life – the drug addict. But religion causes damage to not just the religion addict but to almost everyone they contact throughout their life, especially their children, right? So in most cases, it would be better for humanity if religious people lived their lives in a drug induced haze rather than to have them screwing up their children’s minds, spreading their ridiculous beliefs to other people and voting for corrupt politicians who use religion to gain power, right?
